Cultural Story
The Book of Rites details the 揖, the clasped-hand bow of greeting, varied by rank and by direction, the choreography of deference a gentleman was born to perform. 揖 is the body's polite arithmetic, the bow that measures the distance between men, and the gentleman who botched the direction of the bow measured, accidentally, exactly how little he respected the man he faced.

Read the story behind the character
An elder 作揖 at the festival; two houses 揖讓, yield politely, in the old drama. The choreography is a costume now. The clasped-hand bow is the same measured deference, surviving mostly in the New Year's gesture and the period film, a courtesy the handshake never quite replaced, and the film is only the rite, replayed for a camera that bows back.
Why this character belongs on skin
Before handshakes, there was 揖: hands folded, a slight bow, the whole greeting accomplished without a single touch. In Confucian ritual it was the grammar of respect—depth of bow calibrated to depth of honor, a language spoken entirely by posture. There is elegance in a greeting that keeps a respectful distance yet gives full warmth; the joined hands are both offering and shield, humility and poise in one motion. The East bowing, the West embracing—two civilizations negotiating the same question: how do we honor what is not ours? 揖 answers with the body: I see you; I lower myself a little so you stand taller. For a tattoo it is a quietly radical choice—a mark for someone fluent in deference who is never diminished by it, who knows that the bowed spine is still the strongest one in the room. Folded hands, small arc, great dignity.
