The Shuowen defines 撰 as 'to hold in the hand,' but it drifted early into the work of authorship. Sima Qian, compiling the Shiji, was said to 撰 the arranged accounts of the realm. By the Tang, court historians 撰 the veritable records each reign. The odd one is 杜撰 — 'fabricate' — said to honor a man named Du so obscure his stories were plainly invented.
