Cultural Story
篱 is the rustic fence around a garden or cottage, usually woven bamboo or thorn brush. Tao Yuanming's immortal line — 采菊东篱下, picking chrysanthemums beneath the eastern fence — fixed it forever as the recluse's emblem. A 竹篱 fenced off bean rows and melon beds, kept the chickens in, and kept the office-seekers out.

Read the story behind the character
农家乐 courtyards rebuild 篱笆 of bamboo and brush for postcard charm, property ads promise a green 篱墙 of privacy around villas, and gardeners talk of low 篱栅 railings along flowerbeds. The word still evokes a vegetable patch, a napping dog and slow afternoons — the fence as an icon of the unhurried life.
Why this character belongs on skin
The poet Tao Yuanming, quitting his office for a cabbage patch, wrote the most famous fence in Chinese literature: picking chrysanthemums by the eastern hedge, he looked up and the southern mountains were simply there. 篱 is that hedge—a boundary made of living things, woven bamboo that admits breeze, light, and neighborly conversation while declining pigs and intrusion. A fence is the most honest architecture: it says here I end and you begin, without a wall's hostility. Every good life needs one—the hour after which the phone goes dark, the line past which no one's opinion follows. The character is bamboo plus a field, cultivation and its defense entwined. Worn on the body, it becomes a private geography: this skin, this hourscape, is mine to tend. Let the world read it as an invitation to respect the garden, not a bar against the light.
