罴 is the brown bear, largest beast of the northern mountains. The 诗经 counts omens by bear: dream of 熊罴 and a son will be born, sturdy and strong. Armies praised 熊罴之士 — soldiers with the bear's power — and banners and bronze fittings carried the bear as a badge of raw, unlettered courage.
