Cultural Story
The Zuo Chronicle defines it musically: an ear that cannot hear the five notes is deaf. 耳聋 thus began as a failure of harmony rather than of biology; physicians graded the affliction from slight to total, and the deaf person of village life learned to read faces, drumbeats, and the tremor of floorboards instead.
Common words & phrases
- 耳聋 deaf · deafness
- 聋哑 deaf-mute
- 聋子 deaf person
- 装聋 play deaf
Read the story behind the character
Hospitals now test hearing in decimals: a worker's 耳聋 (deaf, deafness) claim after years beside the stamping press; a school for 聋哑 (deaf-mute) children teaching sign-language poems; a 聋子 (deaf person) neighbor who jokes faster than most people hear. When a husband ignores his wife's question twice, she accuses him of 装聋 (play deaf) — the oldest marital diagnosis on record.
Why this character belongs on skin
Silence is not the absence of sound but the reclaiming of it. To be deaf in the old script is to have the ear stopped, and yet some of the wisest monks chose the sealed ear over the shouting marketplace, teaching that the loudest truths arrive without noise. There is a freedom in closing the gate the world keeps kicking. The warrior who cannot hear the panic of the crowd moves by instinct alone; the lover who stops listening to rumor hears only the one voice that matters. This is not a wound but a discipline, the deliberate hush into which you finally hear yourself. Ink it as a boundary, a gentle refusal. Let it mark the moment you stopped letting the noise decide who you were, and chose instead the deep, private music beneath it.
