Cultural Story

舱 is a compartment — the sealed rooms of a ship's belly. Grand trade junks divided their 船舱, the hold, into watertight sections, a Chinese invention that let a holed ship limp home. Cargo rode in the 货舱, cargo hold, while passengers crowded the cabins; when the airplane arrived, the word flew with it, and 机舱 came to mean the cabin where you fasten your seatbelt.

In the modern world

You stow your bag, find your seat in the 机舱, the airplane cabin, and argue with the seatback for ten minutes. The ferry's 船舱, cabin, smells of diesel and instant noodles on the crossing. At the port the crane lifts containers out of the 货舱, the cargo hold, of a vessel long as three football fields.

Why this character belongs on skin

Below the deck of any ship there is a room that holds everything needed to survive the crossing, the cabin, the hold, the 舱. The character rides the boat radical because it is the belly of the vessel, the place where provisions, secrets, and sleeping men are kept from the weather. To know 舱 is to know the value of an inner chamber: the monk's cell, the lover's bedroom, the chest where a soldier keeps his letters. The Daoists spoke of the body as a vessel to be guarded; the Christian spoke of the inner room where one prays unseen. We are all ships, and what we store in our hold decides whether we reach the far shore. Ink this as a reminder to tend your interior life, to keep something sacred and dry against the storm. Let it be the quiet cabin beneath your skin.
