Cultural Story
荔 belongs to the lychee, the scarlet fruit of Lingnan whose perishability made it legend. Tang lore tells of Emperor Xuanzong posting relays of galloping horses across mountains so fresh lychees could reach Yang Guifei before the flesh browned — the poet Du Mu's couplet about 'red dust and a smiling consort' made the fruit an emblem of imperial extravagance. Su Shi, exiled to the south, made peace with his fate by declaring he would eat three hundred lychees a day and never go home.

Read the story behind the character
June freezers and fruit stalls fill with 荔枝, buyers peeling the rough red shells over the sink, juice running down wrists. Office workers chill a bag for afternoon sharing, debating whether the harvest is as sweet as last year's. A student reciting Du Mu's poem realizes the 'red dust' racing toward the palace was her favorite fruit — and orders bubble tea with lychee popping pearls in tribute.
Why this character belongs on skin
The red shell cracks and the white flesh is almost too sweet. The lychee, that southern fruit the Tang emperor's couriers raced north to deliver, exhausting horses for a single taste his concubine smiled at. It is desire made flesh: rare, perishable, worth the ruin. The poets wept over its short season, knowing beauty that insists on vanishing is the only beauty that truly wounds. To wear this mark is to honor the indulgence you refuse to apologize for, the love, the excess, the thing that costs you. It is a sensual mark, inked near the collarbone or the hip, where the body is most unashamed. Let it remind you that some pleasures are worth the haste, the horses, the fall. Carry the fruit on your skin as a small confession: you would race for it again.
