Cultural Story

莱 named the weeds and 草莱, the uncultivated land waiting for the first hoe — pioneers 'opening the 莱' meant clearing waste ground for the living. But its most famous posting is fantasy: 蓬莱, the isle of immortals anchored in the Bohai sea, its towers of gold and silver glimpsed by Qin emperors who sailed out to find it and returned, of course, without it. Desire for the unreachable has a name, and it is an overgrown field.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A mobile game loads its latest region: 蓬莱, floating isles and immortal palaces, millions of players sailing to a shore Qin Shi Huang never reached. A seed catalog lists 莱菔 — radish — in deliberately archaic type, selling heritage seeds to nostalgic gardeners. An op-ed urges the city to reclaim its 草莱, the weed-choked lots behind the station, and plant pocket parks before summer.

Why this character belongs on skin

Where the garden is abandoned the lái returns first — coarse grass claiming the stone, indifferent to our orders. Lái is the weed, the wild green that will not be told, the humble green that outlives the tended rose. The ancients named a wasted field by it, and a place by its sound. To be lái is to grow without permission, to thrive in the cracked and overlooked places. The Daoist loves the weed for exactly this: it asks nothing and persists, a small scripture of survival. Christianity finds lilies of the field dressed finer than kings. Wear it where you were told you would not grow — a scar, a knuckle, the overlooked part. Let it say you came up wild and uninvited and would not be pulled, that the ground rejected you and you greened anyway.
