蘑 belongs almost entirely to 蘑菇, the mushroom — an umbrella of a word from northern colloquial speech. Mushrooms grew in imperial tribute lists and mountain-forest lore: after summer thunderstorms, villagers combed pine slopes with baskets, knowing which caps fed and which killed. 口蘑, the prized white variety, was carried south through the passes of Zhangjiakou, the trade town stamping its name on it.
