Cultural Story
In the 贞观 reign, when 飞蝗 darkened the fields and a 蝗灾 threatened the Tang granaries, the emperor Taizong picked up a locust and put it in his mouth, saying he would rather the insect devour his own bowels than his people's crops. The 蝗虫 had always been the farmer's terror, a cloud that stripped a province bare in an afternoon. Histories from Han to Qing log hundreds of such plagues, each one a sentence of famine. The character 蝗 is the recorded memory of hunger descending from the sky.

Read the story behind the character
On a farm in East Africa, a drone maps a swarm of 飞蝗 moving toward the sorghum, and an alert goes out before the 蝗灾 lands. Back in a Chinese village office, an old man recalls the last great plague of his childhood and the empty grain bins that followed. A biology student in the lab studies why the solitary 蝗虫 turns migratory when crowded. From the drone feed to the village memory to the experiment, 蝗 still means the same thing: a sky full of hunger, arriving.
Why this character belongs on skin
They come when the wind shifts—a horizon made of wings, and what was green at dawn is bare by dusk. 蝗 is the locust, and Chinese history keeps its scar tissue in this character: 蝗灾, locust calamity, one of the three great terrors of the agrarian year alongside flood and drought. Imperial officials filed reports; temples prayed; the swarms ate the reports' subject matter. A locust cloud is appetite given weather. Millions of mild grasshoppers become one devouring migration when crowding flips their very bodies—longer wings, hungrier blood, a different insect wearing the same shell. That is the unsettling part, the part worth the ink: the gregarious locust is not a species, it is a condition. Change the density, the season, the pressure, and the solitary thing transforms into the swarm. Every market, every mob, every era's madness—ordinary creatures, meteorologically altered into hunger. The ancients saw it as heaven's audit on a misgoverned realm. To wear 蝗 is not to celebrate the swarm but to carry the warning: I know what appetite becomes when it gathers. I keep my inner solitary self, and I know the wind that shifts.
