Cultural Story
Zhuangzi woke from a dream of being a 蝴蝶, flitting without care, and wondered which was real, the man who dreamt the butterfly or the butterfly now dreaming the man. That single parable, 庄周梦蝶, made the 蝴 immortal, though the character never appears except inside 蝴蝶. Poets after him watched the insect drift over chrysanthemums and over the wine cups of parting guests. To those poets, the 蝴蝶 was freedom itself, the soul unburdened of name and office and hovering above the world it had escaped.

Read the story behind the character
At a little girl's birthday, she ties a 蝴蝶结 into her hair and spins to show it off, the bow named for the insect it mimics. In the garden, a real 蝴蝶 lights on the zinnias long enough for a photo, then is gone. A seamstress folds ribbon into 蝴蝶 knots on a wedding dress, and a biology class releases painted ladies to study migration. From the hair ribbon to the flower bed to the dress, 蝴 keeps lending its shape to whatever we want to see as light and free.
Why this character belongs on skin
It never appears alone; the character leans on its partner, the moth radical beside a phonetic of lake-water, together spelling the butterfly—that flickering comma of color rewriting the garden in real time. Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly and woke unsure which way round the dream ran: was a man dreaming he was a butterfly, or a butterfly now dreaming it is a man? The question has drifted down twenty-three centuries and landed, still open, in every quiet hour you have ever had. That is the butterfly's whole teaching: transformation so complete the previous self becomes a rumor. The caterpillar dissolves in the dark of the chrysalis—science now says it keeps memories through the melt, which makes it stranger and truer: you carry what you were into what you become. Every tradition honors this shape-shifter; even the Greek psyche, the soul itself, was drawn with wings. This is the tattoo of second lives. Ink it on the shoulder blade—where wings would be if the old stories held—and let it carry its soft, unsolvable question: whichever one you are, dreamer or dream, you are finally, impossibly, flying.
