Each month in Qing villages the local magistrate read the Sacred Edict of the Kangxi emperor aloud to the gathered people, going through its sixteen clauses in a tireless zhun zhun tone. The character zhun belongs to that repeated, unhurried counsel, the voice that will not be hurried into silence. A teacher's zhun zhu and zhun quan were cut from the same cloth, care spoken until it was heard.
