Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

### Soundzé — zé (2nd tone); also zhài (4th tone) in the old 債 sense. Free-standing morpheme ### Original meaningZé (2nd tone). The Shuowen Jiezi defines it as 「求也。从貝朿聲」 — 'to exact, to demand', a phonogram built on 貝 (the cowrie, i.e. value) with 朿 (cì) as the phonetic. Xu Shen's single gloss 求 is the scene of a creditor calling in what is owed, and Duan Yucai spells out the chain: 「引伸爲誅責、責任」 — dunning becomes punishing becomes duty. 責 is in fact the old graph for 債 (zhài, 'debt'); the Kangxi entry records the 集韻 reading 側賣切 and glosses 「與債同」, citing 《周禮·天官·小宰》「聽稱責以傅別」 — settling loans by their split tallies. The classical citations straddle that split: 《左傳·桓十三年》「宋多責賂於鄭」 (Song kept demanding tribute of Zheng), 《左傳·僖十五年》「西鄰責言,不可償也」 (the western neighbour's reproach is a debt that cannot be discharged), and 《孟子》「有言責者」 (he who holds the office of speaking out). Naming tables give 金 (Metal) with unusual consistency. Honest disclosure: 責 is not a strength or nobility character. Its root is a debt called in, and its two commonest modern compounds pull opposite ways — 責任 'responsibility' and 責備 'to blame'. There is no funeral sense here, but this is a ledger, not a banner. ### The structure (形聲 · 从貝朿聲 — value (貝) + the phonetic 朿 (cì); a phonogram, not a picture (《說文》卷六【貝部】))①貝bèicowrie / valuethe money at the root of the word②朿cìthorn (phonetic)supplies the sound zé; contributes no meaning③責zéto exactthe creditor calling in what is owed④債zhàidebt責 is 債's old graph; duty grows out of debt ### In use todayItemReading / meaningNoteReadingzé (2nd tone); zhài in the old 債 sensesingle syllableCore senseto exact; to reproach; dutyoriginally a debt called inGrammarbound morpheme (modern)責任 duty, 責備 blame, 責無旁貸 no shirking itTattoo fitcaution — honest but cold, and splits two waysa ledger, not a banner ### Closest words in English — and what each misses - Duty / Right — 義 holds 'what is right' (moral); 責 is what is owed, and can be blamed - Responsibility — 責 is only half of 責任; alone it tips toward 責備 'blame' - Blame — 怪/咎 hold blame without the ledger; 責's blame is a debt discharged - Debt — 債 holds debt outright; 責 is the older graph that became duty as wellAn honest note on grammar. Cultural Story

Confucius advised a light hand with others, gong zi hou er bo ze yu ren, be strict with yourself and sparing to blame people, and resentment stays far. The character ze is that claim and fault, the ze bei a friend fears and the ze ren he owns. From the saying the word passed to zhi ze, the public reproof, and to zhi ze, the duty a post lays on the man who fills it.

Where a Western reader can stand: 責 (zé) means 'to exact' and is the original character for 債, 'debt'. Its Shuowen gloss is a single word — 'to demand'. From that come both responsibility and blame. Yan Zhenqing's upright, square hand makes it accountability with a spine. Read it without romance: it is the account being settled, and a reader may equally see 'blame'.

In the modern world

A lead takes ze ren for the breach, and a reviewer zhi ze the slow response in the thread. The contract lists the zhi ze of each role, and a parent ze bei a thoughtless word. The character ze still splits between the duty worn and the fault handed out, the claim a person makes on another.

Why this character belongs on skin

The word sits at the meeting of obligation and blame — what you owe, and what is asked of you when the debt comes due. To be 责 is to stand where the weight lands, to be the one who cannot look away. The Confucian made duty the spine of the person: you are responsible because you are related, because someone taught you, because someone will come after. There is no freedom from it, only the freedom of bearing it well. And yet the word also names the gentle rebuke, the calling-back of the one who has strayed — care wearing the face of correction. To mark yourself with it is to accept the burden as identity, to say I am the one who answers. It is a serious mark, not for the fleeing. Let it rest on your skin like a hand on the shoulder. The debt is the bond. Pay it, and you are free.
