Cultural Story

Liu Zongyuan was banished, bian, to Yongzhou when the reforms of 805 fell, and there in exile he wrote the Eight Accounts that made his name. The character bian is that downward move, the bian zhi of an official sent from the capital to the mist. From the poet's exile the word passed to bian zhi of a currency, the coin let fall, and to bian di, the cut that dims a name.

In the modern world

A bank warns of the yuan's bian zhi against the dollar, and a rival bian di the win in the post. The dictionary flags the bian yi, the slighting sense, of an old word, and a clerk fears bian zhi after the error. The character bian still lowers the coin, the rank, and the worth.

Why this character belongs on skin

Not every eye that looks at you is kind, and the cold ones teach you the most. 贬 is to demote, to censure, to lower in worth, the official stripped of rank, the coin clipped of its metal. Yet the character hides a kind of clarity: to 贬 is also to see truly, to cut away the inflated and find the real. The honest critic is a gift disguised as a wound; he tells you what the flatterers will not. In the market of selves we are all appraised, and the low price can be a liberation, no longer performing for the scale. To carry 贬 is to make peace with being seen plainly, even dimmed. Let it mark you like a frank stamp on the skin, a small character that says you were weighed, found lighter than they said, and lighter was exactly what set you free at last.
