Cultural Story
The 史记 says of the general Li Guang that 桃李不言,下自成蹊, peaches and plums do not speak, yet a path forms beneath them, where 蹊 is the trodden way. From that path came 蹊跷, something oddly off the beaten track, and 跷, the raised foot, the body stepping aside from the usual road. The path beneath the fruit tree became the odd step aside from the normal road.

Read the story behind the character
At a playground, children ride a 跷跷板, seesaw, while a diner 跷脚, crosses a leg, and a detective sniffs something 蹊跷, suspicious, in a ledger. The general's quiet path has become a toy's tilt and a raised ankle. 跷 still means a foot lifted off the ground, whether in play or unease. The seesaw and the raised ankle keep the general's quiet track alive.
Why this character belongs on skin
跷 is the foot lifted high — the raised step, the stilts of festival performers who tower above the crowd on wooden legs, turning awkwardness into spectacle. The character is small but it carries a whole philosophy of elevation: sometimes the way forward is not through but over — the obstacle stepped upon rather than fought. Dancers know this grammar in their bones; every leap begins with a 跷, the deliberate lift that turns ground into air. There is playfulness in it, and nerve. The stilt-walker falls like anyone else, but chooses daily to stand higher than is strictly reasonable. To wear this character is to keep something light in your own gait — the refusal to plod, the habit of lifting the foot a little higher than the terrain demands. Grace, after all, is only lifting done beautifully, again and again, until the crowd below forgets you could ever fall.
