Cultural Story
Hou Debang devised his soda process in 1943 to make 碳酸钠 from common salt without the imported ammonia, and the 钠 that names sodium rode that industry into the Chinese chemical age. The 氯化钠 of the sea was its starting stuff. From those plants the character carried the metal locked in salt and the nation's bid for self-made alkali.
Common words & phrases
- 氯化钠 sodium chloride · salt
- 碳酸钠 sodium carbonate
- 氢氧化钠 sodium hydroxide
Read the story behind the character
A lab shelves 氯化钠 for the titration and 氢氧化钠 behind the lye warning, and a cook reaches for the 碳酸钠 that leavens the dough. The character now labels a reagent and a powder. The sodium Hou freed from salt has become the compound a technician measures and the caustic a worker handles with gloves, the metal of the sea turned to a bench and a bake.
Why this character belongs on skin
Taste the edge of your own sweat and you have already met this element, the restless metal that cannot survive a moment alone with water, that flares the instant it touches the world. Sodium—named in the modern script with the metal radical and a sound like the act of taking, as if the earth were being asked to yield its salt. The ancients knew salt before they knew atoms; they buried it with the dead and set it on the tables of guests, a covenant of preservation. There is a lesson in so volatile a thing, that the most necessary substances are also the most dangerous when unbound. To carry this mark is to admit you are reactive, alive, capable of burning and of healing, of lighting a street at night or preserving a love against decay. Let it sit where the body opens to the air, a small bright confession that you, too, are made of fire kept barely in check.
