2 · The Character: 间 间 (閒/間, jiān) is a picture of a gap. The Shuowen Jiezi (《说文解字》 門部) glosses 閒 as '隙也。从門从月' — a chink; door plus moon. Xu Kai's note spells the image out: '门夜闭，闭而见月光，是有间隙也' — the gate is shut for the night, yet moonlight still gets in, so there must be a gap. Every later sense comes out of that crack. The space between: 《礼记·乐记》 '一动一静者，天地之闲也'. The room you live in, and the measure word for it. The opening a master finds: 《庄子·养生主》 '彼节者有间…以无厚入有间', the joints have spaces, which is why Cook Ding's blade never dulls. Read jiàn it turns adversarial — 《史记·屈原贾生列传》 '谗人间之', slanderers drove a wedge; hence 离间, 间谍 (spy). 间 is a free morpheme. Honest disclosure: 阴间 means the underworld, and 离间/反间 mean sowing discord. Anchor it as 空间 or 人间.

Cultural Story

間 sets the sun 日 between two doors 門, the slash of light in the gap, hence a space, an interval, or the room between. 《説文解字》 reads it as the空隙, the empty place. From a literal crack in a gate it widened to mean any betweenness, of time, place, or people, the pause that separates and connects things at once.
