Confucius balanced the plain and the polished, zhi sheng wen ze ye, wen sheng zhi ze shi, the unadorned man is rustic, the over-adorned is a scribe, and only wen zhi bin bin makes the gentleman. The character zhi is that substance beneath the finish, the stuff a thing is truly made of. From the man it passed to wu zhi, matter itself, and to ben zhi, the nature a mask cannot hide.
