Read the story behind the character

At the door a courier drops a bao guo, parcel, for the household, and a nurse guo zhe, wraps, a sprained ankle in bandage. The history shelf holds a book on guo jiao, foot binding, and a farmer chan guo, binds, the rice seedlings for transplant. The character is the act of winding cloth around whatever must be held, sent, or hidden.

Why this character belongs on skin

There is a tenderness in enclosure. The character shows a fruit cradled inside its clothing—衣, the garment radical, folded around a living thing. To wrap, to swaddle, to bind with care: 裹 is the gesture of a mother's shawl, of bandages on a soldier's shoulder, of the cocoon that does not imprison the moth but makes the wing possible. Daoist sages spoke of wrapping the self in stillness the way autumn wraps a seed in cold, not to stop it but to time it. We all carry something we keep hidden—the ache, the vow, the name we whisper only to ourselves. A scar is also a wrapping; the body's own calligraphy of what survived. Some protections are chosen, and to choose one is an act of quiet sovereignty.
