Cultural Story
Xia is the narrow throat where mountains squeeze a river, the Shuo Wen calling it a strait between mountains. The san xia (Three Gorges) have echoed in poetry since the Chu Ci, all cliffs, gibbons and exile boats. The wu xia (Wu Gorge) and the hai xia (strait) frame both trade and defense in Chinese history, a place of awe and of guarded passage.

Read the story behind the character
You book a san xia (Three Gorges) river cruise and film the xia gu (canyon, gorge) walls rushing past. A ferry crosses the hai xia (strait) to the island, and a bike path clings to the shan xia (mountain canyon). News warns of rocks at the xia kou (gorge mouth) after rain, while travelers on the wu xia (Wu Gorge) chase the famous misty light at dawn.
Why this character belongs on skin
Two mountains lean in until only a thread of sky remains, and the river runs through the wound between them. 峡 is the gorge — the place where the earth clenches and the water is forced to sing. Travelers dread it and poets seek it; in its narrows the self is compressed into something true. The Daoist finds the Way in the valley, not the peak — the low, tight place where everything must pass through. To carry this character is to make peace with your own narrows, the straits you survived that shaped the current of your life. Ink it along the spine or the side, where the body narrows, a map of the passage. Let it remind you that depth lives between walls, that the gorge is not a trap but a throat the world flows through. Wear it where you were squeezed and did not break. The canyon holds the river and is held by the mountain. So are you.
