Cultural Story
Once tied to a cart's pliant load, the character 软 set the thread radical at the side of a cart to mean 'soft,' something that gives under pressure rather than resists. A 柔软 cloth yields to the hand; a 软弱 argument fails to hold. The word 松软 describes a cake, a pillow, a field after rain — anything whose surface surrenders instead of pushing back at all.
Common words & phrases

Read the story behind the character
An engineer writes 软件 for the new phone while her colleague notes the 柔软 gel of its case and the 松软 bread from the break-room toaster. A manager calls a 软弱 excuse and tells the team to 软化 a hard line in the contract. The character that once meant a cart's pliant load now names code, comfort, and the small daily art of giving way without breaking.
Why this character belongs on skin
There is a softness this character refuses to call weakness. 软 is soft — the opposite of hard, the gentle, the yielding, the not-firm, written with a cart and a lack, as if even the wheel must sometimes give. We worship the rigid, the armored, the unbent; this mark is the correction. To carry 软 is to honor the supple strength, the body that bends and does not break, the voice that wins by not raising. The Daoists knew water is the softest thing and wears the hardest stone; 柔弱 is not defeat but the oldest strategy. There is a deep romance in the tender man, the gentle hand, the heart that stays open in a hard world. Let it sit where the skin is thinnest. Some of us were told softness was shame; ink 软 and you undo that lie. The mark is a vow to remain reachable, to stay the thing that yields and therefore outlasts every wall ever built against it.
