Cultural Story

In the Ming novel Jin Ping Mei, servants 嚷 through the courtyard over a broken jar, and the master's household is measured by how quickly the noise dies. The Qing commentator Zhang Zhupo noted that such 嚷 reveals rank before words do. It is the small, domestic clamor of people packed into one walled compound.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

Auntie 嚷 from the kitchen that dinner is ready, voice carrying across three rooms. Two commuters 嚷 at each other on the subway over a stepped-on foot. A street hawker 嚷 his prices into a megaphone, drowning out the bus announcement at the corner stop.

Why this character belongs on skin

The marketplace at noon. Children in a courtyard at dusk. The whole street insisting on its opinion at once—rǎng is the human voice at full volume, unashamed, spilling over. Chinese has a proverb for the counter-position: shuǐ shēn liú huǎn, rén guì yǔ chí—deep water runs slow, and the noble person speaks late. So the sages disapproved of clamor, and yet the poets kept writing about the noise of life with obvious longing: the cries of vendors, birds arguing in a spring courtyard, a city's thousand voices woven into the sound of being alive. Silence can be wisdom, but it can also be cowardice; some truths are only ever said loudly, at the exact wrong moment, red-faced, from the heart. This character holds both sides of that truth. It is the shout and the warning against shouting, inked in one word. Wear it if your voice has ever cracked open with something you could not contain—grief, joy, a single furious fact—and let the world hear what deep water keeps.
