Cultural Story
蛸 is a character with two lives. In 螵蛸 it names the mantis egg-case, a papier-mâché lantern of young mantises glued to twigs, long dried and prescribed in pharmacies as 桑螵蛸 for kidney ailments. On the coast it drifts toward cephalopods — cuttlefish and octopus with their clever bodies and bone-structured arms.

Read the story behind the character
Encounters today are niche but vivid. Herbalists keep drawers of 螵蛸 (mantis egg-case) for traditional prescriptions; children on a winter walk break open a case and find hundreds of paper-thin chambers inside. At seafood counters, 海蛸 (cuttlefish, octopus) curls on ice beside squid, tentacles and cuttlebone making cooks work — one character spanning medicine chest and fishmonger's slab.
Why this character belongs on skin
In the rafters of an old house, on a web strung between beam and rafter, lives a long-legged, harmless creature the ancients called 蛸. Country folklore made it a good omen: when the 蟏蛸 descended, guests were on the road — someone was coming to you across distance, drawn by the light of your dwelling. There is something lovely in that reading. The spider who simply keeps house above you becomes a herald, the quiet square of silk a flag announcing arrival. Our modern lives have scrubbed out such small superstitions, and we are poorer for it; we no longer read the corners of our rooms as letters from the future. 蛸 is a chance to take one belief back — that the world sends quiet signals, that longing is sometimes answered by something hanging silently overhead, patient as silk. Wear it and you wear the omen itself: company is coming, the guest, the love, the news. Keep the lamp lit. Something is already on its way down the thread.
