Cultural Story

豐 showed a tall ritual vessel heaped with offerings, grain, wine, the table god could not finish. A 詩經 feast is 豐年, the fat year after rain. The 說文 calls it full and beautiful. Before it meant plenty it meant the visible pile, the horn of cornucopia set before the ancestors so they would know the living had eaten well.

丰富 dresses up every résumé and buffet; 丰收 is the grain report on the evening news. 丰满 is the figure and the cheeks; 丰盛 the New Year's table your aunt overcooked. 丰厚 is the bonus and the bribe, same word. The vessel has emptied into adjectives of excess, the meal, the year, the paycheck. It now promises abundance the way advertisers do, often more than the plate delivers.

Why this character belongs on skin

Full to the brim and beautiful in the excess. Fēng is luxuriant, abundant, the good-looking prosperity of a thing given more than it needs—and its root lay in a ritual vessel crowned with ornament, the offering piled high enough to please the spirits. The West fears excess; this character celebrates the overflow, the harvest too rich to be modest, the face that is handsome precisely because it refuses restraint. To wear fēng is to claim abundance as a virtue, to say you would rather have too much life than too little. It is a mark for the generous, the sensual, the one who fills the bowl past the rim.
