Cultural Story

Yan gathers the mountain radical with stone, literally rock of the mountain. The Shuo Wen Jie Zi calls it a cliff or crag. In the Chu Ci and landscape poetry, yan is the solemn stone face where recluses dwell and where monkeys cry. Grottoes were cut into yan dong (rock caves), and yan bi (cliff walls) preserved Buddhist carvings for a thousand years of pilgrims.

Read the story behind the character

On a climb you chalk up and grab the yan shi (rock, stone) edge, then peer into a yan dong (rock cave, grotto) where bats sleep. A volcano doc explains how yan jiang (magma, lava) becomes new land, and your kitchen counter is hua gang yan (granite). Builders scan the yan bi (cliff wall) before a tunnel, and kids collect pretty yan by the river.

Why this character belongs on skin

Before there were names, there was the rock, and the rock outlasted every name we gave it. 岩 is cliff and boulder, the mountain's hard confession, the stone face that weather bends against and cannot break. A warrior polishes his blade until the blade disappears into will; the cliff simply is, unmoved by the wind that brags of its strength. In the cold monasteries they carved prayers into such stone so the mountain itself would remember the devotion. To mark your skin with 岩 is to choose the long view over the loud moment, the patience of granite, the silence that does not apologize for lasting.
