Zhang is a mountain wall that stands like a screen, the Shuo Wen family glossing it a mountain like a screen. The Wen Xuan and Tang poetry love die zhang (range of peaks) and ceng luan die zhang (peaks upon peaks) for ranges that close off the view like folded curtains.
