2 · The Character: 明 Ming (2nd tone). The Shuowen Jiezi gives 「明, 照也」 — to illuminate. The older form 朙 pairs 月 (moon) with 囧 (a latticed window), moonlight through the casement; the common form joins 日 and 月, 'sun and moon'. The Appended Statements say 「日月相推, 而明生焉」 (sun and moon push on, and brightness is born); Qian declares 「大明终始」 (the great light begins and ends); the Documents, Yao Dian, praise 「钦明文思安安」. The Great Learning opens on 「明明德」 (illuminate the bright virtue). Name-lore assigns Water (水) and eight Kangxi strokes. As a free morpheme 明 is luminous clarity. Honest route: 明 also means 'next' (明天 = tomorrow) and 'Ming' dynasty; disclose the classical core is illumination — light born of sun and moon, not a calendar word.
