Cultural Story
A young knight in Cao Zhi's poem the White Horse vows 'to give his body for the nation's crisis' — 捐躯赴国难,视死忽如归. The character 躯 is the trunk of the body, the physical self that can be offered up. From it come 身躯, the whole frame, and 躯干, the torso a sculptor measures. The word is heavier than 身; it is the body as something that can be spent.

Read the story behind the character
At the gym a trainer checks a client's 躯干 for symmetry, then the 身躯 in the mirror after months of work. A soldier's family hears he 捐躯 and the formal word lands like a stone — not 'died' but 'gave the body.' The distinction is the poem's, still alive: a 躯 is the part of a person that can be handed over, and some hands close around it willingly.
Why this character belongs on skin
Before the soul was a metaphor, it was weight, bone and tendon and the slow pulse under the ribs. This character names the body itself, the vessel that carries the shouting mind from one cold morning to the next. The Buddhists call it a borrowed house, the Christians a temple, but both agree it is not the self, only the carriage. A warrior learns the body's truth in training, the way it breaks and heals and breaks again, and comes to respect the flesh he once ignored. To tattoo 躯 is to stop fleeing the animal you are, to honor the shoulders that have borne the years. Place it over the sternum where the breath begins, and let it speak: this is the ark that carried me through the flood, scarred and mortal and entirely mine. The spirit may wander, but it is this, this trembling, enduring frame, that walked the whole distance and did not let go.
