Li Shangyin praised a young man's poetry by saying the new phoenix's song is clearer than the old one's — 雏凤清于老凤声, a line that fixed 雏 as the measure of early promise. A 雏鸟 with untested wings and a 雏鹰 just leaving the ledge both carried that hope. To call a plan a 雏形 was to say the shape was there, if not yet the feathers.

Why this character belongs on skin

雏 is the fledgling — the character that puts a bird in the hand at the exact moment it is not yet anything. Down instead of feathers, hunger instead of strategy; the spring word for chicks in the yard and, by extension, for every young thing a field or family produces: 雏形, the embryo of an idea; 雏鹰, the eaglet staring past the cliff it has not dared. The poets kept the image small and precise — young swallows on a beam learning the air in short, disastrous hops. There is a tenderness in the classical use of it that survives flattery: to call someone a 雏 is to see both the incompetence and the inevitability. Every master was once this,flightless and loud.
