寻 was an ancient unit of length — about eight feet — and by extension to measure out and then to seek. The Shijing has lovers 寻寻觅觅, and the Zhuangzi speaks of 探寻 the way. To live an 寻常 (ordinary) life was the quiet ideal, yet sages kept 寻求 (pursuing) a deeper truth beyond the everyday world.
