Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 旌 Jing (1st tone). The Shuowen Jiezi reads 「旌, 游车载旌, 析羽注旄首」 — a banner borne on the roving carriage, its feathers split and set on a yak-tail tip. It is the feathered signal-flag of distinction. The Odes, Gan Mao, picture 「孑孑干旌, 在浚之城」 (lone stands the feathered banner, in the city of Jun); the Rites honor the dead with 旌, and the word extends to 'to proclaim and commend' (旌表). Name-lore assigns Metal (金) and eleven Kangxi strokes (方部). As a free morpheme 旌 means the banner of honor and the act of publicly recognizing virtue. Honest route: 旌 is uncommon as a lone tattoo and reads 'flag' to most; disclose the deeper sense is public commendation — to 旌 is to make virtue visible, a noble, outward gesture.
Cultural Story
旌 is the banner that names. The host raises 旌旗; the court 旌表 the chaste widow, raising a gate in her honor. 心旌 is the 'fluttering heart' of the anxious lover. The word is the signal that both declares and praises — the standard in the field, the arch over the virtuous house, the emblem that turns conduct into stone.
Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 旌 is the feathered banner of distinction — the Latin vexillum borne to commend virtue in public. Alone it is a rare glyph most readers read simply as 'flag'. Wear it for honour made visible, and gloss it, so the commendation — not just the cloth — is seen. Zhao Zhiqian's real, bold seal hand frames it well.

Why this character belongs on skin
The ancient banner made of feathers and silk that a general raised so ten thousand men could find the center of the field. This character is that standard: the pole, the streaming cloth, the signals that turned chaos into choreography. Armies lived and died by them; poets, too — Qu Yuan watched banners darken the sun, and the phrase for an honored homecoming is a banner-topped carriage entering the gates. There is theater in it, glory, wind, and also the meaning beneath the pageant: a visible point everyone can steer by when the dust is blinding. Everyone is either a flag or a follower; the mark chooses the former. It says, with the old language's directness: here is where I stand, look for me here. Inked down the spine or along the arm, it becomes exactly what it depicts — the standard the self rallies to. Rise it. Let the wind do its part.
