Why this character belongs on skin

Before the Daoist philosophers gave the world names, they described a state they called hun dun — a great mingled swirl, water and mist and origin, before anything separated into this and that. It was not chaos as we fear it. It was abundance before division, everything at once, like the moment before dawn resolves into colors. This character is the dun of that phrase: deep water, unsorted, holding all its possibilities. Modern Chinese uses it almost apologetically, for muddle and confusion. But the ancients smiled at hun dun; Laozi thought it the holiest condition available to a person — to remain a little uncarved, unreduced, refusing to be only one thing.
