現 means to appear or be present; it joins 玉 with 見, 'jade coming into view.' In Buddhism 現世 is this present life, and 現身 meant a deity manifesting before believers. The word carries the sense of something hidden becoming suddenly, vividly seen by mortal eyes.

For those of us raised to disappear, 现 is a small rebellion: I am here, I am apparent, I decline to vanish. The Daoists knew that what is hidden and what is shown are two halves of one breath; 现 is simply your turn to be the shown half. You do not have to perform forever. You only have to be, plainly, in the open light, long enough to matter to someone watching from a darker room. To carry 现 is to refuse the erasure that targeted you.
