When Lin Xiangru faced the King of Qin and won back the He Shi Bi jade intact, the deed passed into language as 完璧归赵, returning the disc whole to Zhao. The state of 赵, one of the Warring Kingdoms, gave the character its name; its 赵王 ruled from Handan. A single jade became a proverb of principled courage.
