The "Analects" advise, "first practice what you would say, then follow with the words" — 先行其言而后从之. The word 先 named the forerunner, the one or the act that comes before. The 先生, the "born-before," was the teacher to be heard before one spoke; the 先 thus carried authority by mere priority in time.
