Cultural Story

舟 is a boat, and the oracle-bone form is a simple hull in profile, the oldest picture of Chinese river travel. The 吕氏春秋 tells of the man who cut a notch in the 舟 to mark where his sword fell — 刻舟求剑, the folly of assuming stillness in a moving world. Poets loved the 轻舟, the light skiff: 李白 heard monkeys on ten thousand hills while his boat flew past them all.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

On Dragon Boat Festival you paddle a 龙舟, a dragon boat, until your arms give out and the drummer laughs at you. The lake rents out 小舟, little boats, by the hour, and you drift in a 扁舟, a narrow skiff, past the willows. Your grandmother still says 舟车劳顿 — the weariness of travel by boat and cart — whenever anyone crosses more than two provinces to visit her.

Why this character belongs on skin

The boat is the oldest metaphor we have — 舟 is the vessel that carries the soul across, the little craft in the flood, the ark. The Daoists loved it: life as a borrowed boat, to be set adrift without grief when the crossing ends. The Christian knows the barque of the church, Peter on the water, the passage from death to morning. A tattoo of 舟 is for the traveler, the one who has learned that nothing here is shore. You are carried, and you carry, across waters you did not choose. Wear it on the rib or the wrist, the place a vessel would rest. It is a mark of trust — not in the calm, but in the craft. The wave will come. The boat was made for exactly this.
