Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 击 Jī (1st tone). Traditional 擊. The Shuowen Jiezi: 「攴也。从手毄聲」 — to strike, from 手 (hand) with 毄 as phonetic; 毄 itself depicts a chariot-axle collision, so the sound-element already carries impact. The Yijing uses the word directly at 《易·蒙》 上九 「擊蒙,不利爲寇,利禦寇」 — 'strike the ignorance: it does not pay to be the raider, it pays to repel the raider'. That line is the whole ethics of the character: force is justified defensively, not acquisitively. 《史记·项羽本纪》 records 「击破秦军」; 《诗经·邶风·击鼓》 begins 「擊鼓其鏜,踊躍用兵」 — the drums beat, and we leap to arms — before turning into the most famous vow in the Songs, 「死生契闊,與子成說;執子之手,與子偕老」. 击 is a free morpheme (打击, 攻击, 击败). Honest disclosure: it is straightforwardly a violence word, and 打击 also means to crack down on or to demoralise.
Cultural Story
击 is the stroke that lands. At the 渑池 meeting recorded in the 史记, the envoy Lin Xiangru forced the King of Qin to 击缶, beating a wine jar to keep diplomatic score with his own ruler's zither. The act was a humiliation endured in public. The character gathers drums, fists, and stones: anything raised and brought down to strike, whether in courtesy or in war.
Where a Western reader can stand: Strike the ignorance — but only to repel, never to raid. Western readers should keep 击 inside its Yijing frame or skip it; a bare 击 reads as violence.

Why this character belongs on skin
击 is to strike — to hit, to beat, to attack, the sudden violence of contact. Its old form showed a hand raising a weapon against something held down. But the strike is not only war; it is rhythm, the drum struck to call the dancers, the bell struck to mark the hour, the blow struck against the self that will not move. The warrior ethos lives here honestly: discipline is a kind of hitting, a refusal to go soft. To wear 击 is to name the part of you that acts, that does not merely wish. It is the mark of the one who has stopped waiting to be saved. Place it where your own hand can find it — a reminder that the world bends to the one willing to land the blow. Not cruel. Decisive.
